Renewable Energy Incentives Grant ($3.8 million)

This new program was created using $3.8 million in federal funds received from the Department of Energy as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

It is designed to promote the use of renewable energy in the public sector by offering grants to cover up to 25 percent of the costs (not to exceed $250,000) of developing, implementing, and installing a renewable energy source:

  • wind
  • solar
  • biomass
  • geothermal, or
  • hydropower.

These projects are expected to have long-lasting economic and environmental benefits for local communities.

  • State Agencies
  • Cities and Counties
  • Public Colleges and Universities
  • Community Colleges and Technical Schools
  • Unified School Districts
  • Cities and counties that received a direct allocation of Block Grant funds from the U.S. Department of Energy are not eligible for this grant.

Application Details

  • To request an application, send an email to with
    • the name of the applying entity;
    • name, phone number, email address of contact person;
    • project site address or location;
    • project type (e.g., solar, geothermal, wind);
    • current stage of development, and
    • estimated cost of project.
  • Updated Grants will be awarded in four separate rounds:
    • Round 1: Application deadline was January 31, 2010. Awardees selected February 24, 2010, and will be announced, once final approval from DOE is received.
    • Round 2: Applications may be submitted from March 1 - April 15, 2010. Awardees will be selected by April 30, 2010.
    • Round 3: Applications may be submitted from May 1 - June 15, 2010. Awardees will be selected by June 30, 2010.
    • Round 4: Applications in this final round will be accepted from July 1 - 23, 2010, and reviewed and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
