Commission Approves Westar Energy, Inc., Unanimous Stipulation And Settlement Agreement
Topeka, KS - Today, the Kansas Corporation Commission (Commission or KCC) approved a Unanimous Stipulation and Settlement Agreement reached between Westar Energy, Inc., KCC staff, and the Citizens' U'tility Ratepayer Board (CURB), granting Westar Energy, Inc. a $30,687,487 increase. Residential customers' monthly service charge will increase by $3.00 per month. The new rates go into effect on December 1, 2013.
Westar Energy's application requested a $31.7 million revenue increase to update rates to include actual capital costs incurred to meet Environmental Protection Agency requirements at La Cygne. Westar Energy's filing is a follow-up to its 2011 full rate review.
The Commission regulates public utilities including home telephone, natural gas, electric and water companies, and oil and gas producers. The Commission's regulatory oversight of public utilities primarily pertains to rates and terms of service. In order to ensure that customers of regulated utilities are provided sufficient and efficient service at just and reasonable rates - jurisdictional utilities may not change rates without Commission approval.
