KCC adds human trafficking awareness training to motor carrier program

Topeka, KS - The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) is now including "Truckers Against Trafficking" training in weekly motor carrier safety programs presented in six locations across the state. The national Truckers Against Trafficking program enlists the help of motor carriers in identifying and reporting suspected human trafficking activities as they travel the nation's highways.

"Human trafficking is a problem worldwide and here in Kansas. As the agency that regulates motor carriers in the state, we have an opportunity to get the word out and help educate the industry on what to look for and how to help victims of these crimes," said Mike Hoeme, KCC Transportation Director.

Several thousand motor carriers attend the free KCC training programs each year, making it an effective way to recruit the help of Kansas truckers. The training includes an informational video as well as wallet cards and decals.

A motor carrier safety program was held at the KCC headquarters in Topeka this morning. Programs are also held in Bonner Springs, Chanute, Garden City, Hays and Hutchinson. A complete schedule is available on the KCC website (KCC Motor Carrier Education Seminar Schedule).

Representatives from the Kansas Attorney General's office, the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Kansas Motor Carriers Association were also in attendance at today's training program.

Last month, the Attorney General's office provided training to KCC Transportation division employees as they prepared to incorporate the Trucker's Against Trafficking message into their statewide motor carrier safety programs.
