Deadline Approaches for Submitting Public Comments on Westar Rate Increase

Topeka - Kansas electric customers have until 5p.m. on August 11th, 2015 to submit on-the-record comments to the Kansas Corporation Commission relating to Westar's proposed rate increase.

So far, more than 600 Kansans have participated in the Kansas Corporation Commission's series of public hearings related to the increase. The hearings were simultaneously held in Topeka, Emporia and Salina on July 21st and in Wichita, Hutchinson and Pittsburg on July 23rd with the use of video-conferencing.

"Commissioners Apple, Emler and I are so thankful to the many Kansans who participated in these hearings," said Commission Chair Shari Feist Albrecht. She continued, "Hearing from the public is a vital component of the Commission's deliberation process. There is still time for Kansans to participate in the process by calling or emailing the KCC."

Members of the public may submit comments to the Commission by contacting the Commission's Public Affairs and Consumer Protection Office at 1-800-662-0027, or emailing remarks to This email address is being protected from spambots. Westar Energy's application indicates the rate increase relates to costs incurred to meet Environmental Protection Agency requirements, investment related to the extended operating license for Wolf Creek and investment in distribution and generation assets partially offset by reductions in debt costs. Westar Energy is also proposing new rate options for its residential customers and optional renewable energy programs.

An evidentiary hearing on Westar Energy's request is scheduled to begin Aug. 17, 2015, at 9 a.m., at the Commission's Offices (1500 SW Arrowhead Rd., Topeka). At the evidentiary hearing, Westar Energy, Commission Staff, CURB and approved intervenors may call witnesses, offer evidence and cross-examine witnesses to prove their respective positions.

The Commission's decision is due on October 28th, 2015. A complete copy of Westar Energy's application and supporting testimony is available on the Commission's website at: http://www.kcc.ks.gov.
