KCC to host Nuclear Energy Round Table

The Kansas Corporation Commission (Commission) is hosting a round table to explore and discuss changes in nuclear technology and the nuclear industry, nuclear spent fuel issues, new nuclear plant licensing, and an update on the Kansas Low Level Radwaste Compact. Presenters include experts from the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC), and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). Representatives of Kansas electric utilities and energy policymakers have been invited to participate in the round table discussion on nuclear energy in Kansas.

The round table will be held February 28, 2008, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the Kansas Association of School Boards, 1420 S.W. Arrowhead Road, Topeka, Kansas (immediately north of the KCC building).

The long range supply plans for Kansas electric utilities forecast a need, within the next ten to twenty years, to construct new baseload generation. Not only is electric demand and energy use forecasted to increase, but Kansas electric utilities also need to begin the planning process to retire aging, less efficient generating units. Given the timeframe necessary to develop new sources, Commission staff believes the Commission should initiate a discussion now to enable Kansas utilities to consider all generation technologies in their long range resource planning. One option is the development of nuclear plants in Kansas.

Parking is available behind the building and can be accessed by using the entrance on the north side of the building. The round table is an open meeting and the public is welcome to attend.
